Golden Retriever
May 17, 2001- September 7, 2010

My name comes from Wapow Kétho, which in Cree means “snowy owl.” I’m a blonde Golden Retriever, which is fairly rare but was all the rage in the 1930s. When I was just a youngster I took an obedience class, but I must have slept through the recall portion of the course… To stay active I tried my paw at agility, but much to my master’s chagrin I preferred giving my paw to anyone who would shake it over negotiating obstacles!
OK, my master said, let’s try tracking. Now there I was in my element! Slipping into my harness was like slipping into a trance. Marc would have to run to keep up and avoid letting go of the leash. In the end, I returned to agility. I somehow managed to make Marc more “Zen.” A water dog, I perform best when it’s raining. There’s less stress and more fun, and I run with great elegance… especially because there’s a cookie waiting for me just outside the ring. More social with humans that I am with my four-legged comrades, I adore begging for affection. Say the word “car” and I’m ready for an outing. I love to go for walks on the trails at the Centre… it helps me get the crazies out!
A faithful, loving companion, I know how to keep a secret. Marc, Oopik and I make an excellent team, the “Golden Team.”
